Planning a visit to a Christmas market: tips on getting there, tickets and budget

To ensure your winter city break is a complete success, it’s worth doing a bit of preparation. With these tips, you can enjoy the Christmas markets in a relaxed manner – without unnecessary costs or long queues.

  • Choose the best time to visit: Christmas markets are usually less crowded during the week. The atmosphere is particularly magical at dusk, when the festive lights come on.

  • Book your travel and accommodation well in advance: Popular Christmas destinations get booked up quickly. If you book early, you’ll often benefit from more attractive prices. Many destinations are easily accessible by train from Switzerland.

  • Take cash and a card with you: Not all Christmas market stalls accept card payments. So do remember to take the local currency with you. With Swiss Bankers’ banknote delivery service, you can conveniently order foreign currencies via the Swiss Bankers app and have them delivered directly to your home in Switzerland.

  • Allow for your budget and the cup deposit: Mulled wine costs around €4–6 per cup at many German Christmas markets, and sometimes more. There is often a refundable cup deposit on top of this.

  • Wrap up warm and book your tickets: Warm clothing and waterproof shoes are a must. For popular events such as the cave markets in Valkenburg, you should book tickets well in advance. The Christmas market in the Ravenna Gorge is already sold out for 2026.
